Birds of a feather flock to…the International Crane Foundation! One of Wisconsin’s best-kept secrets, it’s the only place on Earth where you can see all 15 of the world’s crane species together. Guided tours of the world’s cranes are just the beginning of the fun visitors can have at the foundation, though. There are also nature trails and a gift shop filled with nature-themed items from around the world. Take a look:
Located in Baraboo, just a short drive from the water park capital of the world, you’ll find the headquarters of the International Crane Foundation.
Founded in 1973, the foundation operates in more than 50 countries in an effort to save the cranes, preserve the places they inhabit, and educate the public on the majestic creatures.
The Wisconsin headquarters are open to the public, and that’s lucky for us since it’s the only place in the world where you can see all 15 species of crane.
The fact that it’s home to every species of crane is already impressive enough; however, it’s even more so when you consider that 11 of the species are facing extinction.
Among the rare species housed at the Wisconsin locale is the whooping crane.
An incredible sight, there are only about 700 left in the entire world!
While at the International Crane Foundation headquarters, you can take a guided tour to learn all about the birds.
During the tour, you’ll be afforded lots of up-close views of the birds. You’ll also be treated to tons of info about the birds, thanks to informative signage and exhibits.
The fun doesn’t end with the tour, though. Several natural trails wind through the site’s 250-acre prairie.
After exploring the grounds, make sure to check out the gift shop, which is brimming with nature-themed items from around the globe.
The International Crane Foundation’s headquarters are open daily, April 15th - October 31st, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Remember, hours may be affected due to COVID-19, so make sure to call or check the site’s Facebook page prior to visiting. For more information, call (608) 356-9462. You can also check out the International Crane Foundation website or Facebook page.
This isn’t the only place you can have some wild fun. Read about another here.
