Stroll Then Swim on This Beach Hike in Wisconsin That’s Perfect for Summer

Make a splash this summer with swimming and hiking on the Whitefish Dunes Yellow and Red Loop trail in Wisconsin.

Door County is home to some of the best vacation spots in Wisconsin. Whether it's visiting the Washington Island Stavkirke or indulging in some famous cherry pie, the area has been synonymous with summer vacation since it was first featured by National Geographic in 1969. Of course, no good summer bucket list would be complete without a hike and a swim. The Whitefish Dunes Yellow and Red Loop in Whitefish Dunes State Park is the perfect place to work up a sweat on a hike and cool off with a swim in Lake Michigan.

Whitefish Dunes State Park is one of my favorite state parks in Wisconsin. It always reminds me of the dense forests of Germany, where I spend about half of my year. The trees surrounding the sandy shores feel like a juxtaposition of a body of water that is so large it seems like an ocean, and a thick forest that makes one think they could be in the Alps.

The 3.2-mile Whitefish Dunes Yellow and Red Loop trail is an easy route that takes beginner hikers through thick forests and meadows. At the end of the trail, backpackers are rewarded with impressive views of the Great Lake and a sandy beach to relax on. The route takes most adventurers an hour to complete and is a great option for those with young children. Leashed pets are also allowed on this hike. Along the beach, visitors will find picnic shelters and a beach viewing platform.

The Whitefish Dunes State Park is also home to a variety of wildlife. It's a designated migratory spot and is extremely popular with birdwatchers. In the spring and fall, many migratory birds can be spotted on their journey across Lake Michigan. Additionally, the park is home to coyotes, white-tailed deer, gray and red foxes, porcupines, woodchucks, and more.

For anyone who wants to add a little more pizzazz to their hike, the Old Baldy Loop is easily combined with the Whitefish Dunes Yellow and Red Loop. At 93 feet high, the Old Baldy Loop takes travelers to the tallest dune in Wisconsin. The dolomite bluffs on the Cave Point Lakeside Trail are just a few minutes away as well.

While summer is my favorite time to visit the park (and the best time for a swim), winter still brings fun to the Whitefish Dunes Yellow and Red Loop. This loop is frequently used for cross-country skiing, while the beach portion is popular with snowshoers. You can always try your own polar plunge if you're feeling adventurous.

The Whitefish Dunes Yellow and Red Loop is one of the best ways to get outside this summer. You'll work up a light sweat on your hike and refresh with a jump in the lake. Pack your bag, grab your swimsuit, and head to Whitefish Dunes State Park for a day of fun in the sun this summer. What other hikes in Wisconsin end with a splash?
