Escape To Baxter’s Hollow For A Beautiful Wisconsin Nature Scene

Baxter’s Hollow State Natural Area in Wisconsin is a stunning natural preserve known for its expansive forests, pristine creek, and diverse wildlife.

When it comes to natural beauty and spectacular scenery, Baxter’s Hollow isn’t lacking. In fact, the natural area is overflowing with both. From an expansive forested area to a mountain-like creek and scenic gorge, it’s a beautiful oasis to which you’ll want to escape.

As far as beautiful places in the Badger State go, Baxter’s Hollow State Natural Area ranks pretty high up there.

It’s actually the Nature Conservancy's largest preserve in Wisconsin. But that’s not its only distinguishing feature.

Part of what makes the natural area so remarkable is that it’s home to a large area of deep forest. Known as Big Woods, it’s the largest intact contiguous southern dry-mesic forest in Wisconsin.

The expansive wooded area is not only idyllic but provides a critical habitat for many rare bird species. Ninety-two breeding birds flourish within the area – and that’s in addition to 39 mammals.

A true geologic gem, the site also boasts a scenic gorge, boulder-strewn slopes, and huge rock formations.

Otter Creek also lies within the natural area. The creek’s unbelievably pristine waters are crystal clear and nearly undisturbed.

Only adding to the creek’s beauty are the large quartzite boulders that fill it.

Each season brings a new type of beauty to the natural area.

Whether covered in snow in the winter...

...blooming wildflowers in the spring and summer...

...or bold foliage in the fall, Baxter’s Hollow never ceases to amaze.
