Hiking To This Aboveground Cave In Wisconsin Will Give You A Surreal Experience

Wisconsin has its share of caves and caverns, but none is more breathtaking than at the Apostle Islands. The trick is that they are only open for hiking during the winter, and only then when conditions are cold enough that ice freezes over (you can kayak through them during the summertime). Here are some impressive shots of the cave.

1. As you can see, the caves are quite large.

2. It requires a 2 mile hike round trip to see.

3. While the ice caves are closed when the ice is not thick enough, you can never be totally sure the ice will hold.

4. This applies to the ice above you, which can fall at any time.

5. These caves were created by glaciers thousands of years ago.

6. Your voice reverberates like crazy in these caves.

7. The ice stalactites truly look awesome.

8. The caves look awesome anyway, but with ice hanging all over them, they truly look stunning.

9. Make sure to bring an ice pick just in case!

10. In some places, the ice is crystal clear.
