The closest I've come to foraging is using a plant identification app on my phone. Still, many of my friends and family regularly set off into the wilderness in search of edible plants. If you love the thrill of scavenging for wild herbs, vegetables, or even mushrooms, the Monongahela National Forest is one of the best places to go foraging in West Virginia. Not only can you find ingredients for your next meal, but you'll also enjoy breathtaking scenery that looks like an enchanted forest.
With dozens of trails ranging from short, easy day hikes to overnight backpacking trips, the Monongahela National Forest is a truly special place. Some of the best hikes in West Virginia can be found in this verdant oasis that looks like something out of a storybook. Lush greenery blankets the mountain landscape, transforming it into a nature lover’s dream where nothing exists but you and the trees. Waterfalls cascade down rock ledges, cranberry bogs are waves of crimson against the surrounding forestland, and scenic overlooks provide stunning panoramas worthy of a postcard.
But you aren’t just here to hike, are you? You’re on a mission to find edible plants, herbs, and possibly fungi to make your culinary endeavors more rewarding than ever. Nothing beats the feeling of not just eating locally, but harvesting the ingredients yourselves, and the Monongahela National Forest is a forager’s dream—especially in the Dolly Sods Wilderness area.
Foraging options vary depending on the season. Chances are you'll want to come during the spring because that's when ramps, also known as wild leeks, grow. They start popping up early in the season and are beloved for their deeply savory flavor that many describe as a cross between onion and garlic. The entire plant is edible, and popular uses for ramps include compound butter, pesto, or grilling or sautéeing them as an addition to salads and other dishes.
Just make sure to harvest ramps responsibly by only taking from healthy patches and cutting off the leaves rather than pulling up bulbs; this ensures the plant can regrow and reseed.

Other edible plants and greens in the Monongahela National Forest include dandelion, stinging nettle, and fiddleheads (also known as ostrich ferns). If you're a mycophile, morels grow in the spring, and their meaty flavor adds depth to dishes like soups, pasta, risotto, and pizza. Chanterelles, chicken of the woods, and hen of the woods mushrooms make their appearance in summer and fall. It's important to note that you should only forage for wild mushrooms after consulting with a mycologist because many harmless species have deadly lookalikes.
Wild berries, grapes, and pawpaws (a tropical-flavored fruit native to the region) are ripe for the picking in summer, and fall brings several types of nuts. Finally, medicinal plants like ginseng, yarrow, and echinacea are renowned for their healing properties and are often used to make tea. Keep in mind that permits are required to forage for certain regulated plants, such as ginseng.

And don't forget bear spray, as bear sightings are common.
