Take An Unforgettable Drive To The Top Of West Virginia’s Highest Mountain

Spruce Mountain in West Virginia offers breathtaking views and a scenic drive to its summit.

West Virginia is full of beautiful mountains with incredible views (there’s a reason it’s nicknamed the Mountain State), but there is one mountain that stands out from the rest. Not only is Spruce Mountain the tallest mountain in West Virginia, but it’s also the highest ridge of the Allegheny Mountains. The drive to the top is one of the most scenic in the state, and the views from the summit are absolutely mesmerizing.

Spruce Mountain is located in the Monongahela National Forest in eastern West Virginia.

When you're wanting to go exploring, but not necessarily wanting to lace up your hiking boots, this drive is the perfect solution.

The drive to the top of the mountain is filled with twists and turns, but just about any car can make it during the warmer months.

You’ll have some epic windshield views along the way.

Once you get to the top, you’ll be standing at 4,863 feet above sea level.

Spruce Knob is the highest point in the eastern United States between the Adirondacks of New York and Mount Rogers in Virginia.

Park your car and head to the observation tower, where you’ll have a jaw-dropping 360-degree view of the entire region. Here, you’ll have amazing views of grassy openings and pastures, forested ridges, and mountain ranges as far as the eye can see.

There are nearby trails, including the 0.5-mile Whispering Spruce Trail which also features some commanding panoramic views, too. If you can time your visit with the sunset, you won't be disappointed.

But no matter what time of day you visit Spruce Mountain, you're sure to be dazzled by the views.

After making the climb to the top of West Virginia's highest mountain, and before summer is over, be sure to take a drive down one of these scenic byways in West Virginia for a truly picture-perfect day, too.
