There’s A Waterfall In West Virginia That Looks Like A Small Plitvice, But Hardly Anyone Knows It Exists

Plitvice Lakes National Park is the largest national park in Croatia, and, in addition to multiple terraced lakes, features a stunning series of limestone-backed waterfalls. It's a stunning nature scene, one worthy of a place on a list of the world's most beautiful waterfalls. And, no surprise to those of us enamored by West Virginia's beauty, there's actually a Plitvice look-a-like (in miniature, of course!) right here in West Virginia.

Of course, the size of the West Virginia look-a-like is nothing like the scope of the massive chain of lakes and falls in Croatia.

Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site formed by water flowing through the mountainous karst of the area.

But zoom in a little closer. Still Croatia, but is this starting to look a little more familiar?

Reader, meet Falling Waters Waterfall in Falling Waters, West Virginia, a beautiful waterfall hidden away just steps from Route 11 in Berkeley County.

Yet here is the surprising thing about this Plitvice mini-me: as stunning and convenient as Falling Waters is, almost no one knows this beautiful West Virginia waterfall even exists.

In addition to its beauty, Falling Waters has other draws. It neighbors the mighty Potomac River, another reason to visit this area.

Falling Waters is also uniquely historic: several Civil War battles were fought here, and Robert E. Lee's army crossed here when they were retreating from Gettysburg.
