No matter how you decide to spend your time, the day is not complete without a scenic drive along Gay Allentown Road, the main road alongside the lake.

Fishing at Elk Fork Lake is a year-round activity, with each season offering unique opportunities to catch different types of fish. Spring and summer are prime fishing seasons, with bass, channel catfish, and bluegill being the most commonly caught species. But we've also caught green sunfish and white crappie in the cool, pristine waters before, too.

Fall offers the chance to reel in some trophy-sized bass, while winter provides a peaceful and serene fishing experience for those willing to brave the cold. Ultimately, we've never run out of things to catch here.

Tips for Planning Your Visit

Elk Fork Lake can get pretty crowded on weekends, especially in the summer. So if you're hoping for a more secluded fishing location in West Virginia, go during the week or at night (nighttime fishing is allowed). Make sure you bring plenty of gear, like a tackle box, bait, and extra fishing line, so you have more than enough supply.

If the lake's too crowded, consider stopping by O'Brien Lake first. It's got plenty of fish, as well, and can shake up your normal go-to spots. Be sure to check out the fishing regulations, too, as Elk Fork Lake has specific catch-and-release rules.

And if you're fishing on a boat? Make sure you can transfer it smoothly via the boat ramp, and that your boat meets the 10-horsepower motor limit. Most importantly, check that your fishing license is up to date.

After a few hours on the lake, we like to visit other outdoor attractions in the neighborhood, like the six-mile-long Kevin Clegg Trail System and Cedar Creek, one of West Virginia's most beautiful state parks. Then, a pitstop at Fairplain Yacht Club or Pete's Hot Dogs for dinner is always in order.

How to Get to Elk Fork Lake

Getting to Elk Fork Lake from Ripley is fairly easy. It's right off Gay Allentown Road on Route 33, plus it's a short 15-minute drive from Allentown, and 30 minutes from the larger city of Spencer. The road along the lake is well-paved and easy to drive, too.
