Bethany College in West Virginia features the unique Parkinson Forest, an old-growth forest with hiking trails and a waterfall.
Bethany College is a small liberal arts college located in the picturesque town of Bethany, West Virginia. While there are many things to love about this beautiful campus, one of the most notable features is the Parkinson Forest, a little-known old growth forest with hiking trails and a waterfall at Bethany College in West Virginia.
Welcome to the oldest institution of higher learning in West Virginia: Bethany College, a small but nationally recognized school in Bethany, West Virginia.
One thing you'll notice right away about Bethany College is that it is surrounded by forest. Miles and miles of forest.
Known as the Parkinson Forest, this woodland on the Bethany campus is a 260-acre tract of land that has been left largely untouched for more than 150 years, especially 60 acres of it, which has been officially designated old-growth.
It is a truly unique place, with trees that are well over 200 years old and an ecosystem that is home to a variety of wildlife.
The forest is primarily sugar maple, but also features American beech, white oak, red oak, and tulip tree.
Some of the largest of these trees standing in silent witness may have been alive when this land was peopled with the Osage and Shawnee Native American tribes.
Surely the forest's other hidden natural wonder was around back then: Parkinson's Waterfall, a breathtaking cascade hidden in the trees that tumbles down a series of moss-covered rocks and into a pool below.
Modern visitors to the Parkinson Old-Growth Forest at Bethany College in West Virginia can hike along one of the many hiking trails that wind through the woods, taking in the sights and sounds of this ancient forest. Along the way, watch for a variety of birds, deer, and other wildlife, as well as the occasional wildflower or mushroom.
Overall, the Parkinson Forest (complete with hiking trails) and Parkinson's Waterfall at this beautiful little campus are just two of the many reasons we know of to fall in love with Bethany College. Whether you're an avid hiker or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, a visit to these ancient woods is sure to be a memorable experience.
