One of West Virginia’s most picturesque spots, Babcock State Park is 4,127 acres of gorgeous mountain scenery. This park in the southern part of the state offers ample hiking, fishing, and boating opportunities for an outdoor getaway. It’s also a photographer’s dream, with wide-open views on the mountaintops, historic buildings, and great conditions for autumn leaves.
Babcock State Park is most known for the Glade Creek Grist Mill, a re-creation of the original 1890 Cooper’s Mill. It’s fully functional and guests can even purchase cornmeal ground from the mill.
Downstream from the mill is a waterfall that rushes between a series of strewn boulders. Put together, the scene is extraordinarily tranquil and a popular photography spot.
The mill is a sight to behold no matter what time of year, including winter. Even better, there’s a parking lot within walking distance, so there’s no hiking required to view this popular spot.
There’s more to the park than the mill. There are over 20 miles of hiking trails, from easy loops to challenging climbs up the mountains. The rewarding panoramic views are stunning.
Boley Lake offers fishing and canoe rentals. The lake, and the rest of the park, is a good spot for visitors looking for autumn leaves.
If you want to extend your stay in the park, there is a 52-unit campground open spring through autumn, weather permitting. There are also 28 cabins, including some that are near the grist mill. All are outfitted with kitchen utensils, bed linens, and Wi-Fi.
Babcock State Park is only 20 miles away from the famous New River Gorge Bridge and New River Gorge National Park, making this an easy addition to a West Virginia trip itinerary.
There is a visitor center and gift shop across the parking lot from the grist mill. Ask a park ranger about tours of the mill. Learn more about Babcock State Park with a visit to the official website for West Virginia State Parks.
