Ever wondered, What are the best waterfalls near me in Washington? Or, maybe you've been searching for the top waterfall hikes in Washington. Either way, we have an answer for you, and it’s Little Mashel Falls. The best part is that there’s a hiking trail, which allows you to get a behind-the-scenes look at the waterfall - and by that, we mean you can walk behind the waterfall! Called the Little Mashel Falls Trail, it’s located near Eatonville in the Mount Rainier area, and it’s easily one of the best waterfall hikes in Washington.
But first, a word of caution: If you go, do not try to access the falls from the Alder Cutoff Road. People have died slipping on rocks from the trails on that side. Instead, enter from Highway 7. Follow the yellow diamonds on the trees and signs for the UW Pack Forest. Even the "safe" trail can get slippery, so be very careful. The trail is moderate at best, and it’s not recommended for young children. Older children who have hiked before might enjoy it.
The trail takes you toward a set of three waterfalls. There are also plenty of small ponds and falls along the way to stop and relax, go for a swim, or have a picnic.
The falls can also be accessed from Eatonville’s Bud Blancher Trail, a wide, crushed gravel path with bridges that cross the Mashel and Little Mashel rivers. This path is slightly easier, though the trail is unmarked in places and the path is often muddy and rocky. No matter which trail you take, you should wear good footwear and exercise caution.
But your reward for making the journey will be worth it. The three waterfalls are easily among the most beautiful places in Washington. What's more, you can walk behind the largest one, Little Mashel Falls, when the water levels are low (usually in summer or fall). And it’s a totally surreal experience.
It’s hard to say just why waterfalls are so appealing. But there’s something about that water rushing over rocks that appeals to our senses, and walking behind the falls will make you feel like you've discovered one of the most beautiful places in Washington!
