If you've been to the Olympic Peninsula, you already know that it's heaven on Earth, especially its otherworldly beaches. But if we absolutely had to pick a favorite, we'd recommend Third Beach the most. Not only does it have a personal (and scenic) walking trail, the Third Beach Trail, but it has its very own waterfall.
Third Beach is located near La Push, in the beautiful Olympic National Park.
From Highway 101, you'll head west onto Highway 110 at the intersections of Highway 110 and Highway 101. Drive for about 10 miles and you'll reach the trailhead for Third Beach Trail.
The Third Beach Trail is about 3.6 miles in total length, although you're welcome to just walk part of it.
You'll trek through a forest of tall trees (and often fog) before popping out right on the coast.
After about 1.3 miles, you'll reach Strawberry Bay, which is where you'll find Strawberry Bay Falls.
The flow of water at the horsetail falls varies throughout the year, but it's always an impressive sight.
There's nothing like watching a 100-foot stream cascade from the cliffs into the rocks below.
There are times where the water appears to flow directly into the ocean.
You can typically see the waterfall in ay season, but the best viewing times are actually from November to May.
Although it may be tempting to try for the best views, crossing over the rocks at the base of the falls is not recommended. Stick to the beach trail and you'll be fine.
After you've checked out Strawberry Bay Falls, you'll have a few options for continuing on.
You can head back through the forest to your vehicle, or keep going until you reach Taylor Point. Either way, congratulate yourself on a hike well done.
The Olympic Peninsula is one of the most uniquely beautiful parts of the country, and it's definitely an underrated treasure in Washington.
And this just might be the best beach hike of them all.
The Third Beach Trail offers unparalleled views of the coast. If you haven't been to the Olympic Peninsula in awhile (or ever), follow this road trip and you'll have a great time.
