The Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens, A Lilac Garden In Washington, Will Be In Full Bloom Soon And It’s An Extraordinary Sight To See

If you prompt someone to think of beautiful flowers in Washington, they'll likely picture fields of Skagit Valley tulips or the dazzling wildflowers of Mount Rainier National Park. But there's an equally delightful display just 30 minutes outside the charming community of Vancouver.

Learn more about the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens and plan your visit to its famous lilac bloom!

You'll find this charming garden at the former home of Hulda Klager, a gardener extraordinaire who began hybridizing her yard's lilacs in 1905. Just five years later, she'd created 14 new varieties, many of which visitors can still see— and smell— at the park today.

Those 14 new cultivars were nothing compared to Klager's lifetime contribution. By the time she passed, she'd introduced 250 lilac varieties to the world.

Today, the garden only contains about 90 of these, partly due to a catastrophic flood that drowned all but the park's oldest trees in 1948. This tragedy inspired an outpouring of community support. Customers who'd recently purchased lilacs from Klager returned them, helping rebuild this flowery sanctuary.

Hulda Klager's garden has operated as a non-profit since 1976, ensuring everybody can experience her incredible collection. Though you might be able to stroll through the property quickly, I recommend slowing down. Not only are the flowers gorgeous, but their scents are, too. Klager's garden is a good reminder to stop and smell the flowers.

Though the gardens are open by appointment only in the fall and winter, they open in the spring to coincide with the lilac bloom. This year, visit during Lilac Days, a celebration of this delicate flower that runs from April 20 to May 12.

Be sure to check out Klager's home, an idyllic 1800s house that's listed as a historical site and remains furnished with her belongings. It's a meaningful way to understand this ingenious Washington character more deeply and put her horticultural contributions in the context of her personal life.

There are many places to view beautiful flowers in Washington, but few feel as remarkably personal as The Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens in Woodland. There's no denying our alpine wildflowers' majesty or our tulip farms' splendor. Still, there's something equally moving about spending time in a garden crafted from one person's immense passion and care.

Just 30 minutes from Vancouver, a visit to this gorgeous spot makes the perfect addition to your spring travel itinerary. If you're spending a weekend nearby, plan your trip to coincide with the garden's Lilac Days. It may become your new favorite spring tradition.
