These Easy Washington Hiking Trails Deliver Big Views for a Romantic Valentine’s Day

You don't have to take their breath away on your next date; Washington's winter scenery will do it for you.

One of the best things about living and hiking in Washington is the incredible eco-diversity. Everywhere you turn, there's a new natural wonder to discover, a new lake to take your breath away, or a new peak to summit. Then, come winter, all that wild and wonderful natural beauty gets kicked up a few notches under glittering layers of snow and ice (and likely some mist), creating some seriously romantic backdrops that — when combined with the right company — are sure to fan the flames of love.

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, there's no better time to bundle up and explore Washington's stunning winter sights hand in hand with your other half. From icy cascades to snow-dusted rock formations and everything in between, here are just a few easy trails to check out with your favorite hiking partner this season:

1. Moulton Falls

Waterfalls, side trips, and gorgeous photo ops are what to expect on this peaceful stroll along the Lewis River, just a short drive from Vancouver. With towering trees, lush surroundings, and beautiful dustings of snow, the Moulton Falls Trail captures much of Western Washington's magic without heading into the state's most crowded corners. And, since no swimming is allowed at the falls, this short and lovely 5-mile hike is the perfect trail to explore with someone special in winter.

2. South Beach Trail

Their dating profile said they love long walks on the beach, and it just so happens that you do too! For the adventurous coast-loving couple, winter doesn't have to mean skipping out on sand and waves. Although you might want to hold off on the surfing plans till warmer weather is back on the forecast, the San Juan Island National Historical Park is a fantastic place to experience a Washington winter in a new way, and the South Beach Trail is a favorite for good reason. Clear skies, crowd-less shorelines, diverse ecosystems, and unique historical remnants make this leisurely 2-mile stroll one that's sure to spark plenty of conversation.

3. Steamboat Rock Trail

For the geology-loving couple, Washington has a wealth of fantastic rock formations and rugged landscapes to hike and climb — and (bonus!) they're perfect for catching a romantic sunset. Hiding on the north end of Banks Lake in Eastern Washington, Steamboat Rock State Park is a small but mighty park that features spectacular views of coulee country and unique basalt features intermingling with the 27-mile-long reservoir. The main Steamboat Rock Trail travels through sandy shoreline and up into the rocks to overlook the water, but there are actually quite a few forks to follow depending on what area you want to see and how long of an adventure you're craving.

4. Gold Creek Pond Loop

For the couple craving those classic winter sights, like frozen lakes, puffy snow-laden evergreens, and gorgeous peaks (sans the huffing and puffing up a mountain), Gold Creek Pond is a gorgeous spot that's perfect for a stroll with your date. The short, 1-mile trail is flat, the winter views are stellar, and there are even some places to enjoy a picnic if you pack along something warm and toasty.

5. Baker Lake East Bank

For the couple craving a magical winter outing that feels like a scene from a postcard, Baker Lake is always an idyllic destination, whether to casually admire the icy lake views or hit the trails. The Baker Lake East Bank Trail has a few different route options, but it has some of the prettiest forest segments and most romantic bridges we've ever seen — perfect for photos! Admittedly, it's a lengthy trail (approximately 10 miles), but it's an easygoing one through mossy old-growth that offers both phenomenal solitude as well as backpacking options if you feel like adding winter camping to the agenda.

Washington's winters have a reputation for being wet and gloomy, but these pretty trails show off the state's off-season beauty in new ways. Whether you're taking on the trails solo this year or looking for fresh date ideas, get out there and (re)discover romance right here in the Evergreen State.
