Don’t Try This One Hike in Washington if You’re Afraid of Heights
This challenging Washington hike climbs Mount Storm King above Lake Crescent, delivering one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in Olympic National Park. But, it's not for the faint of heart.
I enjoy a scenic, family-friendly hike. It doesn’t have to be long, and it doesn’t have to be steep for me to feel a sense of accomplishment. However, this isn’t everyone’s attitude. I have several friends and family members who want to push themselves—who find trails with a high level of difficulty and that offer some serious bragging rights. Here in Washington State, the Mount Storm King Trail is that type of hike. It’s not too long, but it’s steep, dangerous, and certainly not for beginners. However, if you are prepared for the climb, it’s hard to find another trail in Washington that compares.
Located approximately 20 miles from Port Angeles and nestled within Olympic National Park is Mount Storm King. This incredible mountain is beautiful from a distance, but its views up close and along the Mount Storm King Trail do not disappoint.
The Mount Storm King Trail is a 4.3-mile out-and-back trail. It’s quite popular within Olympic National Park and will certainly offer views that make you fall in love with this corner of the state. But this trail is not for the faint of heart. It’s steep, a challenging workout, and search and rescue operations are not uncommon. Do not tackle this hike unprepared or without strong outdoor fitness skills.
This trail begins on the southeast side of Lake Crescent, near the Storm King Ranger Station. You’ll actually follow the signs for Marymere Falls, a flat, family-friendly trail that takes you to a gorgeous waterfall. After a short time on this trail, you’ll come to a fork in the road, with a sign pointing to Storm King. Get ready because this is where the challenge begins.

Your quads and calves will quickly scream at you as you begin this portion of the journey. In total, you will climb more than 2,100 feet in elevation—take plenty of breaks and don’t overdo it. As you climb, you’ll hike through forests with towering trees. You’ll come to viewpoints where you can see beautiful sights like Barnes Creek Valley and Lake Crescent. It’s absolutely stunning.
Eventually, you’ll come to a sign alerting you that it's the end of the maintained trail. This is a great place to turn around if you are afraid of heights or a little timid outdoors. However, if you have an extra dose of bravery, are well prepared, and have the physical ability to climb, you may wish to continue onward. This next portion of the trail is rough and steep. It’s extremely exposed and quite dangerous. On this section of the trail, you’ll come to the Mount Storm King Ropes.
On this section of the journey, there are several ropes you will need to climb to make your way up the mountain. Sturdy shoes are a necessity as you scramble up the mountain, holding onto the rope. I also recommend bringing gloves to prevent rope burn and to help you more easily grip the rope. Take your time and be patient with others as you climb, and communicate with other hikers. Also, be alert and aware of others. This isn’t a trail for daydreaming.
Always remember that going up is much easier than going down. This section of the trail has seen numerous injuries, as well as hikers experiencing panic attacks as they climb. Search and rescue operations are common in this area of the trail, so be smart. If you are hesitant about climbing the ropes, it may be best to turn around before you start to ascend. Sometimes, Mother Nature is not very forgiving.
If you do conquer the rope section of this trail and make it to the top, you are going to be in for one unforgettable view. Depending on when you climb, you may find yourself high above the clouds. You’ll truly feel on top of the world. It’s gorgeous.
Again, I want to stress the importance of being aware of your hiking abilities, and do not be ashamed if you choose to turn around before tackling the ropes. The views you’ll still experience are gorgeous. And no matter how far you choose to go, be prepared with proper footwear, water, and clothing.
