The Iconic Trail in Washington Everyone Should Hike Once in Their Lifetime

No matter where in Washington State I travel, I am always in awe of its beauty. While I love the coast, there is something absolutely breathtaking about the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. To explore this area, you’ll want to take a drive on State Route 542, also known as Mount Baker Highway. This is one of the best scenic drives in Washington and it leads you to one of the most iconic and beautiful destinations — Artist Point.

Mount Baker Scenic Byway is a paved road that takes you along the North Fork Nooksack River, through thick forests, and to Artist Point. It begins at the Interstate 5 interchange in Bellingham and climbs more than 5,000 feet in elevation.

Along your drive, you’ll pass small towns and friendly communities. You’ll capture breathtaking views of Mount Shuksan and Mount Baker. You’ll also visit Heather Meadows, which is home to Mount Baker Ski Area. But nothing is quite like Artist Point.

Artist Point sits at the end of the Mount Baker Highway. It is the type of place where every angle is jaw-dropping. Bring a camera and snap away – you won’t want to forget these landscapes.

While Artist Point is a popular scenic destination in Washington, it is also home to several trails including the bucket-list-worthy Artist Ridge Trail. This short trail features a universally accessible entrance and is perfect for the entire family. You can find the trailhead on the southern end of the Artist Point parking lot. The accessible entrance is located by the restrooms.

This is a paved lollipop-type trail with interpretive panels along your way that share the history of the area. Take your time as you read — the things you learn and see will make you fall in love with this enchanting destination.

The trail takes you to a gorgeous overlook where you’ll find benches to sit and enjoy the view. Stop and enjoy the majestic setting in front of you. And don't forget to look for wildlife as well. It isn’t uncommon to see mountain goats in this area.

While Artist Point and the Artist Ridge Trail are certainly bucket-list-worthy, you’ll want to plan your visit just right. Access to this area is seasonal and it is typically open from the middle of summer until the first major snowfall in the area, which generally occurs in the early fall. Although, in the winter months, many people enjoy this destination on a snowmobile. However, you must be aware of avalanches and the routes are not marked.

Artist Point is one of the most iconic views in Washington and there are several ways for you to enjoy the gorgeous scenery. The Artist Ridge Trail is just one option that is perfect for everyone in the family — you’ll never regret your visit.
