The 3-Hour Road Trip Around The Mount Baker Scenic Byway Is A Glorious Spring Adventure In Washington
Mount Baker Highway offers a scenic and relaxing drive through stunning landscapes in Washington State, best enjoyed in late spring or summer.
March lasted for approximately six months this year, while we seem to have lost the entire month of April. The good news is, there's still plenty of spring left here in Washington... and the better news is, our beautiful state parks and attractions are slowly starting to reopen. Taking a nice day trip is a great way to enjoy a change of scenery without worrying about crowds. And if you live near the Mount Baker Highway, you should take advantage of that underrated stretch of terrain.
The Mount Baker Highway is also known as State Route 542.
This 58-mile long highway is located in Whatcom County, which is full of stunning scenery.
Start in the Bellingham area, cruising onto WA-542 E toward Glacier.
You'll pass through rural areas before entering Mount Baker-Snoqualmie Forest and heading north.
As you can imagine, this place sometimes sees a lot of snow, and it's best explored when the weather is warm.
Summer is the best time of year to make the trip, but late spring in this area is absolutely enchanting as well.
Soon, you'll come to the charming little town of Glacier, population 211.
This former mining and logging town is best known for being the gateway to Mount Baker.
You'll pass the Nooksack River, waterfalls, and small logging communities on the highway, all while being at the base of the 10,781-foot Mount Baker.
Mount Rainier may be the most iconic mountain in Washington, but Mount Baker is equally as incredible.
The route also takes you past the majestic Mount Shuksan, which is best enjoyed from the shores of Picture Lake.
This is one part of the trip where getting out of the car, even briefly, is highly encouraged.
This hasn't been a normal spring (or year), but venturing out on this nice, relaxing drive will put your mind at ease.
Just make sure you create the perfect playlist.
