This Is Washington’s Most Unique Hiking Trail in a National Park Rainforest
This hiking trail is one of the best ways to bask in the beauty of the Quinault Rainforest.
Did you know Washington State is home to more than 22 million acres of forested land? No wonder it is nicknamed the Evergreen State! Olympic National Forest is just one of eight National Forests throughout Washington and is one area that I simply can’t get enough of. This National Forest is the ultimate outdoor lover’s playground with countless recreational activities and places to explore, including the Quinault Loop Trail.
Mother Nature sure outdid herself when creating the many natural features of the Olympic National Forest. Within this 628,115-acre forest, you’ll find majestic mountains, breathtaking lakes, rushing rivers, and even the Quinault Rain Forest.
Quinault Rain Forest is not only located within Olympic National Forest but also Olympic National Park. This beautiful destination is tucked away in the Quinault Valley and is known for its wide variety of tree species including Western Red Cedars, Alaska Cedars, Mountain Hemlock, and multiple Douglas-firs. This rainforest also receives up to 17 feet of rain per year.
While there are many recreational activities at Quinault Rain Forest — such as camping and spending time at Quinault Lake — I recommend you lace up your hiking boots and tackle the easy, flat, and stunning Quinault Loop Trail (also known as the Rain Forest Nature Trail). This hike takes you through the heart of the rainforest, along the shores of Quinault Lake, and even past waterfalls.
This is easily one of the best hikes in the Olympic National Forest for the entire family. This is a loop trail that is just under four miles. It is relatively flat, with nearly 350 feet of elevation gain, and takes you near some of the most incredible natural features of the Quinault Rain Forest.
As you hike, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the dense forest. The lush vegetation is breathtaking and you’ll spot flora and fauna of all shapes and sizes.
You’ll also hike along the shores of Quinault Lake. Enjoy the views and take the time to admire the natural beauty of the Evergreen State. It will certainly leave you impressed.
Cascade Falls and Cedar Bog are natural areas you’ll pass along your way. Each one is quite scenic and an ideal spot to stop and rest. If you find yourself alone in these parts of the trail, I suggest you slow down and listen to the sounds of nature. These are areas where you'll leave feeling thankful for the world we live in.
The Quinault Loop Trail is open throughout the year, and a Recreation Pass is required to access this trailhead. You can learn more about all accepted passes at the U.S. Forest Service website.
If you love to explore, there’s nothing quite like the Quinault Loop Trail in the Olympic National Forest. This hike is easy and takes you to some of the most remarkable natural features in this corner of the state. How lucky are we to live near such magical natural beauty?
