Washington has such an abundance of forest hikes, mountain trails, and lakeside spots to enjoy. But when you want to spend some time in nature but you don't have all day to get there, your options are a bit more limited. Luckily, you can find plenty of natural wonders near your own backyard. The Black River Riparian Forest and Wetland is located within Renton's city limits, and some people aren't even aware that it's there.
The Black River Riparian Forest and Wetland is a hidden oasis on the outskirts of Renton.
It may not be in the middle of town, but this location is far from rural. It's easily accessible from I-405.
This area is home to more than 50 species of birds, including one of the largest great blue heron colonies in the Northwest.
If you're a fan of bird-watching, you'll love this place. And if you're not, you might be by the time you leave.
The forest is a complex ecosystem with an abundant wildlife habitat.
Start walking through it and the noises of the city will immediately start to disappear.
The forest has several easy nature trails perfect for stretching your legs and getting some fresh air.
The Waterworks Gardens Trail is a mile-long loop that takes you past all the top attractions.
You can also stroll the boardwalks of the Black River Trail and Springbrook Trail.
None of the walking trails in the forest are overly difficult, and they're all beautiful.
Part of the Lake to Sound Trail even passes through the park.
The Lake to Sound Trail is a 16-mile path that will eventually link the Puget Sound with Lake Washington. It currently passes through the cities of Des Moines, SeaTac, Burien, Tukwila, and Renton.
