The Newest Addition Of This Gorgeous Washington Waterfront Park Is A Must-See

Point Defiance Park is a massive urban park in Tacoma, and it's safe to say it has something for everyone. From the zoo & aquarium to the old-growth forest, this place is a little piece of paradise. And a couple of years ago, the addition of Dune Peninsula made it even better.

Dune Peninsula opened to the public in July of 2019, much to the delight of Washingtonians everywhere.

The peninsula is named after the book "Dune," written by Tacoma native Frank Herbert.

Frank Herbert was born in 1920. When he was only nine, he rode from this spot to the San Juan Islands entirely on his own.

At 14, he swam across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, and just a few years later, he and a friend sailed from Tacoma to British Columbia and back again. Herbert wrote "Dune" in 1965, mainly due to its environmental message.

The book "Dune" is about a group of characters who restore the planet’s environment after its ecological collapse.

And that's what Metro Parks Tacoma did with the peninsula. This was once a wasteland, and now it's a pristine park with plenty of landscaped hills and nature trails to walk, run, or bike.

You can even rent the Dune Peninsula Pavilion for your private events.

The Pavilion is available for picnics, small birthday parties, and celebrating life's events.
