Packwood, Washington, is a small town of about 1,200 in easternmost Lewis County that doesn't get enough credit for how beautiful it is. And located in pretty little Packwood is a park that definitely doesn't get enough credit; Skate Creek Park features all the best parts of this lovely section of our state, from lakes and creeks to mountain views, rolling hills, stunning woods, and so much more. Come check out this underrated park in Washington solo or with family - everyone will love it.
Officially known as Washington State Parks Packwood Property, Skate Creek Park is a wonderful respite from the bustling real world.
It was at one time supposed to become an official state park, but for reasons unknown, this never happened. Nevertheless, it's a delight for nature lovers and needs to be explored at least once.
Here, you'll find some truly tranquil woodlands.
Sometimes, it's so quiet here that you'll hear nothing but the songs of wild birds and the chittering of occasional squirrels.
The property meanders alongside the last 3/4 of a mile of Skate Creek.
Skate Creek Trail is a favorite for many visitors, offering two miles of easygoing adventuring. You'll probably want to bring a camera for this one.
The trail is jaw-dropping and showcases a lot of what makes Washington state so perfectly beautiful.
The distant mountains accentuate the beauty of the woodland foreground you'll find yourself immersed in, offering up awesome chances to get some epic shots. Even if you only have your phone's cameras, it counts.
It's not always about your equipment; many times, it's about what you do with what you have.
Shoot away and then brag to all your friends about the amazing hike you totally went on the other day. I'm not here to judge.
Parking at Skate Creek Park is limited, so your best bet is to arrive early and/or during the week - you might even get most of it to yourself.
Washington is already known as a place covered head-to-toe (or should we say "mountain to stream") in pristine beauty, and Skate Creek Park only further proves this. All year long, it's an adventure for the soul.
So, come on out to small-town Washington and explore this lesser-known hidden gem of a park.
You won't regret a moment of it... unless maybe your shoes get wet and you've got to deal with that for the rest of your adventure. Just pack additional socks and shoes, because it'll be tough to resist dipping your toes into the river.
