This Peaceful Canyon Hike In Washington Takes You Straight To A Winery
Hike the Cowiche Canyon and Uplands Trails in Washington for a scenic adventure ending at Wilridge Winery and Vineyard.
No matter how much we're told that exercise is important (it is) and no matter how much you love hiking (hopefully a lot) there are always days where we feel like we might need to bribe ourselves to get our daily steps in. And if you live in Washington, there's no better reward for finishing a beautiful hiking trail than a glass or two of local wine.
Luckily, Central Washington has an easily accessible- beginner-friendly canyon hike that will take you straight to a winery. Lace up your sneakers or hiking boots and prepare for a visual delight with an exciting ending.
The Cowiche Canyon and Uplands Trails are located just outside of Yakima's city limits, inside the Cowiche Canyon Preserve.
The Cowiche Canyon Preserve is a small pocket of wildlands that includes both the canyon and uplands.
The trail is about 3.5 miles out-and-back, and it's pretty easy to navigate.
The hike itself is very family-friendly.
The route takes you through the canyon to the east trailhead at the end of Cowiche Canyon Road.
As you make your way down the canyon, you'll spot some unique reddish basalt columns.
Depending on the time of year, you could spot some wildlife like canyon wren or enjoy some beautiful wildflowers.
While it's often too hot to hike here in the middle of summer, mid-spring or early fall is a great time to go.
Eventually, you'll start to see the signs informing you you're well on your way to your destination...
... and before you know it, you'll arrive at Wilridge Winery and Vineyard.
Wilridge is a small family vineyard, orchard, winery, and distillery that has been in operation since 1988. The focal point is the wine bar and tasting room, situated in this century-old farmhouse.
Relax and unwind from your canyon hike with some wine (and perhaps a picnic) in the outdoor seating area.
The scenery here is breathtaking.
Wilridge is a certified organic and biodynamic vineyard, so the wine has a unique flavor.
Both the winery and the distillery are operated in the European tradition. Come try it for yourself and taste the difference.
Have you ever done this picturesque hike? Even if you'd rather get there by car, Wilridge makes a pretty great day trip destination.
