If you love cheese, animals, and the scenic landscape of the Shenandoah Valley, this cheese farm is a must-visit.
Just 23 miles south of Charlottesville, you’ll find Caromont Cheese Farm, a local business that produces award-winning goat and cow cheeses. Though small in size, this site has made quite an impact on Virginia’s culinary scene. Not only will you find Caromont cheese products in local restaurants, but you’ll be delighted to learn about how the farm includes the community in its many wonderful events. (Hint: visitors are invited to play with and care for the baby goats.)
The philosophy behind Caromont Cheese Farm is a timeless one rooted in the belief that animals that are treated and fed with care will produce the finest milk.
The goats that live on the picturesque farm are well loved, as you’ll see from these photographs. They’re grass fed and have plenty of room to roam and play. While there are no cows on the property, the cows milk is sourced from a farm with a similar ideology.
Cheese from Caromont Farm has a reputation for being wholesome and delicious, so it's no wonder why you'll find products from here in various markets, restaurants, and shops around Virginia.
Photographed above is a specialty cheese known as "Red Rowja," complete with smoked paprika and olive oil.
In addition to enjoying the delicious products from Caromont, you can also visit the scenic farm.
Throughout the year, Caromont hosts a variety of events, ranging from farm sourced dinners to small group tours. It’s the perfect opportunity to learn about this farm.
Tours and tastings usually taking place during Saturdays in the Fall. Upon arriving to the farm, you’ll be able to sample cheeses and learn about the unique process of making them. Each tour costs $20. Because the farm is relatively small, visitors are asked to make appointments ahead of time. This ensures that everyone gets a personal and memorable experience.
Ever wanted to try your hand at cheesemaking? There are classes available for this delicious skill as well.
The owner of the farm herself will cover the steps used in beginner cheesemaking. Some of these topics include culturing, milk chemistry, and curd formation. After a day of cheese-making, everyone can sit around the table and enjoy the fruits of their labor.
By far, the most adorable introduction to Caromont is an event known as Snuggle Sessions.
Each year, the farm welcomes nearly 100 baby goats and requires help to ensure each newborn is cared for. Working with the nonprofit group A Fertile Foundataion, Caromont asks for volunteers to help feed and cuddle these babies. Open houses are also available for those who are just curious to see how the animal farming side of this cheese business works.
As you can imagine, all of these specialty events are wildly popular. Follow the link below to the website and schedule for your visit ASAP!
