History and nature go hand-in-hand here in Virginia, where the landscape tells a complicated and fascinating story of years gone by. Today, we'll introduce you to one such place where the past doesn't feel too far away. Tucked away near the Blue Ridge Parkway, you'll find a route known as the Yankee Horse Ridge Trail. This short-and-sweet trail follows a former logging railroad and eventually leads to a waterfall, promising enchanting scenery at every turn.
The Old Logging Railroad at the Yankee Horse Ridge Trail is located near Montebello and parking can be found at Milepost 34.4 of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The moment you set foot on this pathway, you'll be enchanted by the meandering railroad route. This well-worn path is actually a former logging railroad route.
The narrow-gauge railroad was once known as the Irish Creek Railway, built by the South River Lumber Company to access trees that were previously untouched until the 1900s.
Continue along this short path and you'll eventually hear the sound of rushing waters from the nearby Wigwam Falls.
The name "Yankee Horse Ridge" dates back to the Civil War when a Union solider's horse was injured here.
Before long, you'll have reached this gorgeous landmark in the woods. It's rare to find such a beautiful waterfall without much of a hike at all.
