Bear Creek Lake State Park Is an Underrated Virginia State Park That Will Impress You This Fall
Virginia’s Bear Creek Lake State Park offers serene trails, lake paddling, and beautiful autumn foliage just an hour from Richmond.
Fall is a fantastic time to explore Virginia's state parks. The cooler temperatures and changing foliage give way to some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable. It's the perfect season to try something new, too, which is why you may be motivated to explore a new-to-you state park. For me, Bear Creek Lake State Park in Cumberland County, less than an hour from Richmond, is next on my list. This underrated state park is gorgeous year-round, but fall holds its own kind of magic that you'll want to experience.
Virginia is home to 43 state parks, each offering a unique slice of natural wonders. Bear Creek Lake has a quiet, understated allure that lends itself perfectly to a peaceful autumn adventure. It's tucked away in the heart of central Virginia's Cumberland State Forest, an easy and picturesque drive from Richmond. The park measures 329 acres with a lovely, 40-acre lake. While I'm typically drawn to the mountains, there's something so quintessentially fall about a peaceful lake walk, and that's exactly what you'll find here.
The Bear Creek Lake Loop is an easy, 3.2-mile loop highlighting the most beautiful views in the park. The path is generally well-maintained, although it can get a bit tricky to navigate in a few places, so downloading the AllTrails map ahead of time is recommended. Also, the last quarter mile or so is along a public road that's not technically part of the park.
The views of the lake are gorgeous, and on a calm day, you'll see the reflection of the fall foliage in the water—double the beauty! Some parts of the trail wind through the woods, too, giving you the feeling of being totally immersed in the forest. This park is especially popular in the summer, although autumn gives the added benefit of an insect-free hike, which is always a plus in my book! The loop can be completed in about an hour, but this isn't a trail to rush; slowing down and taking in the scenery is all part of the joy of being here.
Paddling is another popular activity, and you could easily spend a few hours kayaking around the lake, enjoying the stunning foliage views around you. Throughout the summer and early fall, the park offers guided kayak tours. These hour-long excursions focus on the park's unique ecosystem, and you'll enjoy the chance to explore the lake in a solo kayak.
Bear Creek Lake State Park is a wonderful place for camping, although the campground is currently closed for renovations, with a potential reopening in April of 2026.
So the next time you're inspired to take a reflective, peaceful walk through a dreamy autumn-scape, I invite you to spend some quality time at Bear Creek Lake. It's the perfect place for a fall adventure in Virginia. For even more fall-filled fun, try planning your own trip using Only In Your State’s itinerary planner.
