Swim at This Natural Waterfall Swimming Hole in Virginia for the Ultimate Outdoor Fun

If there’s one thing about summers in this state, it’s that you’re going to need a game plan. When those temperatures begin to rise, finding ways to beat the heat becomes more and more important! You can’t spend all summer cooped up indoors, right? Add this epic waterfall swimming hole in Virginia to your summer to-do list—you won’t regret it!

Saint Mary’s Falls is one of the most popular swimming holes in Virginia. It takes a bit of effort to get to this little slice of paradise, but I promise you—it’s worth it!

The trail to Saint Mary’s Falls is a 4.3-mile out-and-back trail. The majority of the trail hugs the river, and there are multiple water crossings along the way. Prepare to get wet! The region has had an above-average snowfall this year, so those water crossings can get pretty fast. Take your time, and don’t rush—one step at a time.

Make sure you’ve got the proper hiking gear before tackling this trail, and that includes a good pair of shoes that you won’t mind getting wet. There used to be large boulders that would help with the water crossings, but I believe they were washed away during Hurricane Helene. You’ll likely see some fallen trees and other remnants of hurricane damage along the way. 

The trail meanders through the woods, surrounding you with rocky cliffs and the sounds of rushing water. I love seeing all the vibrant shades of green along this trail, and I’m a sucker for the soundtrack of rushing water on a hike. 

There are a few swimming areas along the trail, but the actual waterfall swimming hole is the most popular. These rocks can be slippery, so I’d recommend keeping your shoes on (or swapping them for waterproof shoes). 

Visitors can climb up on the rocks and even to the top of the falls if they choose to! Just keep in mind that there is no lifeguard on duty, and no one wants to end the day in the hospital. Be safe and smart!
