The Historic Park In Virginia That’s Like Something From The Old West
The Old West is alive and well at Wilderness Road State Park in Ewing.
This southwest Virginia state park is relatively unknown to the the rest of the state, and yet its attractions and authentic pioneer feel are reason enough to make the trip. While it's not unusual to find reenactments and historical demonstrations in Virginia, few are geared towards the kind of lifestyle that evolved in this part of the state. Here's more on why this season is the perfect time to make your trek to Wilderness Road State Park.
Wilderness Road State Park can be found just outside of Cumberland Gap, in the southwest portion of Virginia.
The park was established around the historic Wilderness Road, a route traveled by Daniel Boone and other early frontiersmen in the eighteenth century.
This road was primarily used to access the Falls of Ohio in Kentucky by thousands of people either by foot or on horse. The road was then abandoned by 1840.
Today, a visit to Wilderness Road State Park offers the opportunity to explore some of the scenic stopping points along the original trail.
The landscape here is simply breathtaking, no matter the time of year.
These cabins have been reinforced to resemble their original structure. Seeing them, you might think you’ve been transported to the days of the Oregon Trail.
And if you plan your trip ahead of time, you'll be able to witness some demonstrations and reenactments.
On December 10th, visitors can enjoy the Frontier Christmas, a production that celebrates the spirit of the holidays on the frontier.
Also located in the park, the 1878 Karlan Mansion celebrates Christmas with beautiful victorian-inspired decor.
But the true spirit of Wilderness Road is found outdoors...
...where you might even catch a glimpse of grazing bison.
For a unique trip this winter, Wilderness Road State Park is a must-visit.
Wilderness Road also features acres of land for hiking, a frontier museum, picnic areas, and much more. The park is open from 8 AM until dusk.
