You might not think of winter as an amazing time to hike, but you'd be remiss not to venture out to Virginia's trails during the colder months. One prime example is Crabtree Falls. Beautiful year-round, this epic Virginia hike is considerably less crowded during the wintertime. Plus, depending on how cold the weather is, you might even see portions of the waterfall frozen over. Here's more on why you should head to Montebello, Virginia, and hike the tallest waterfall in Virginia this season. Just don't forget to bundle up!
Crabtree Falls is among the most popular hikes in Virginia, yet relatively few venture to the trail during the winter season. For those that brave the cold and bundle up, enchanting adventures await.
Crabtree Falls is conveniently located near the towns of Lexington and Waynesboro, though it requires a bit of driving from either town.
Aside from being the tallest series of cascading waterfalls east of the Mississippi, Crabtree Falls is unique in that visitors can hike alongside it, marveling at each section of the falls.
The 3-mile roundtrip trail takes the form of a staircase hike and is both challenging and rewarding. There are lots of lookout points where you can stop to catch your breath and admire the scenery, which this time of year might include a frozen cascade!
The trail isn't wheelchair accessible, although there is a paved viewing platform at the base of the falls where visitors can admire one of the most beautiful portions.
From the top of the waterfall, prepare to be amazed as you enjoy a panoramic view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This time of year, the views are truly unobstructed and the quiet of winter becomes all the more magical.
So the next time you're craving some fresh air and an exhilarating winter adventure, you'll be glad you ventured to Crabtree Falls.
