Having an outdoor adventure in Virginia often means taking on a bit of a challenge. That's certainly the case when it comes to the Clinch River Swinging Bridge. Surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, this swinging bridge also requires a few moments of bravery to cross. Rest assured that your efforts will be well worth the adrenaline boost. Here's more on why you'll want to add this fascinating landmark to your Virginia outdoor bucket list.
The Clinch River is a breathtaking body of water that flows southwest from Tazewell, Virginia through the Great Appalachian Valley.
There are a handful of swinging bridges that cross over this great river, one of which can be found near the town of Clinchport.
With a population of just 70 people, Clinchport is one of the smallest municipalities in Virginia. The town was originally incorporated in 1894 as a town for loggers, who would transport the logs — sometimes, by floating on top of them — all the way down to Chattanooga.
Many of the area's swinging bridges are still maintained by the state. Visitors enjoy crossing these swinging bridges while experiencing a fascinating perspective of the water.
Of course, the bridge does swing by nature, so you might find it to be a somewhat intimidating cross-over!
Fortunately, there are plenty of additional ways to enjoy the beauty of the Clinch River. The water is perfect for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming.
