The Epic 3-Mile Trail in Shenandoah National Park That’s Worth the Climb
This Shenandoah National Park trail requires a steady incline and a few tough rock scrambles, but trust us when we say the views are worth every step.
Going for a hike in Shenandoah National Park almost always means a climb—whether you're hiking to an overlook or making your way back to the trailhead from a waterfall tucked away in a ravine. While there are some relatively flat trails, it's the steep ones that typically promise the greatest reward. And that's what makes Mary's Rock such a great option. This leg-burning trail isn't easy by any stretch of the imagination, but when you reach the top, you'll agree that the panoramic mountain view is worth every step.
There are two ways to summit Mary's Rock, both of them via the Appalachian Trail: a 2.7-mile trail from Meadow Spring and a 3.7-mile hike from Panorama. The first option, also known as the North approach, is a bit more popular, starting with the larger parking area. Not far from the Thornton Gap Entrance, the lot is located at milepost 31.6 on Skyline Drive. Please note that visitors will need to pay the entrance fee to Shenandoah National Park.
The trailhead is located right next to the parking area, marked by a kiosk with information and a trail map. A quick spur trail will take you to the Appalachian Trail, marked by white blazes, all the way to a second spur trail that leads to the top.
The trail is consistently challenging throughout its duration, with steady inclines and lots of rocky stretches to navigate. That said, it's doable for most ages and skill levels. Just be sure to wear sturdy hiking boots and plenty of water, even on a cool day. Hikers also recommend hiking poles for extra support.
Like many Shenandoah trails, this one's almost entirely in the shade. And despite being a popular hiking destination, it's rarely overcrowded.
You'll catch a glimpse of the expansive mountain views about a mile into the hike, but keep pushing on towards the summit, where the real show awaits. Whether you step onto the rocky overlook or climb all the way to the top of Mary's Rock, you'll be blown away by the panoramic mountain views—think layers upon layers of the Blue Ridge Mountains grounded by the Shenandoah Valley below.
Take time to soak in the scenery before heading back down—after all, you've earned it! You might even pack a picnic to enjoy with your 180-degree mountain view. Just be sure to pack in everything you bring; as always, leave no trace!
