The Most Romantic Valentine’s Day Hike You’ll Find in Vermont
Breathe in the fresh air and soak up the beautiful views on this short, sweet, and romantic hike in Vermont. It's the perfect way to celebrate Valentine's Day.
Have you ever noticed how quickly holidays seem to pass by? We spend weeks, and sometimes months, preparing and, when the day finally arrives, it feels like we blink and it’s over. Valentine’s Day is usually no exception. Add to that the stress of crowds at restaurants, movie theaters, and other romantic destinations, and sometimes we just need a few minutes to savor the day with the one we love. Even if you already have plans for Valentine’s Day, add this short, sweet, and romantic hike in Vermont to your itinerary.
All you need is about half an hour to stroll along the South Kent Pond via the Appalachian Trail, but you’ll probably want to earmark a little more time – especially once you learn about the enchanting surprise along this romantic path in Killington.
Although the 1.4-mile trail that meanders through Gifford Woods State Park snags an easy rating, lace up sturdy hiking boots or shoes you don’t mind getting wet and muddy. Muddy conditions are expected after it rains. Ice is common in the winter, so consider wearing spikes and bringing a trekking pole. Don’t let those obstacles stop you, though, from experiencing this winter wonderland on the most romantic day of the year.
As you stroll along the predominately flat trail, which welcomes leashed dogs and is kid-friendly, watch for roots jutting out of the ground, which can be difficult to see if snow blankets the path. Listen as the snow crunches beneath your feet as you wander through the forest and cross a wooden footbridge that passes over a stream, an idyllic spot to stop and enjoy the surrounding scenery, including tiny waterfalls right beneath you.
Perhaps the most romantic part of the trail sits at the end of a dock overlooking Kent Pond: Two Adirondack chairs, perfect for sinking into while holding mitten-clad hands as you gaze out at the frozen or maybe even snowy pond. If you’re not in a hurry, sit down, breathe in the fresh air, and soak in the serenity of the moment.
The dock marks the halfway point of the out-and-back trail so, when you’re recharged, turn around and make your way back to the trailhead. If you time it just right, you may even be able to catch one of the glorious sunsets, for which Vermont is known, as the sun falls asleep behind the pond.
