These 7 Vermont Hiking Trails Lead To Some Incredible Pieces Of History

1. Bomoseen Slate History Trail

You can hike through the remains of West Castleton in the Bomoseen State Park. There were 43 houses, a store, a school, three barns, two sawmills, and several quarries here in the 1800's.

2. Mt. Ascutney

Mt. Ascutney is more than just a mountain — a few hundred million years ago it was an active volcano! Hiking on a volcano? Sure, why not? After all, it's safe now.

3. Robert Frost Interpretive Trail

This one-mile trail in Ripton has some of Robert Frost's famous poetry on the way. You, too, can take the road less traveled and see where the inspiration came from for some of his most beautiful works.

4. Trapp Family Chapel

Head to Stowe where the hills are alive with the sound of music. Here you can take a hike on the property and find the chapel built by Werner von Trapp between 1945-1948. It's a steep hike, but totally worth it. Head over to their website for more info about their hiking trails.

5. Little River State Park

Within this state park in Waterbury, you'll find a ghost town. For more than 100 years, this was a thriving community with several businesses, five schools, and about 50 families.

6. The Long Trail

The Long Trail is the oldest long-distance trail in the whole country! It runs 273 miles from the top to the bottom of Vermont. There are many places to hop on and off the trail so tackle whichever part is perfect for your abilities (and time). 7. Goodsell Ridge Preserve

This 83-acre preserve in Isle La Motte has something pretty incredible — the Chazy Fossil Reef. This is the oldest known diverse fossil reef in the world.
