This Scenic Vermont Hike Is Even Better in the Winter
Skip the slopes and try this easy 3.5-mile Vermont hike at Lowell Lake State Park in Londonderry, known for beautiful winter views after fresh snow.
I don't believe in slowing down just because the temperature drops—in fact, winter is my favorite season for an outdoor adventure, and nothing beats a snowy hike. If you're looking for a relatively easy, rewarding Vermont hike, let me point you toward the Lowell Lake Trail in Lowell Lake State Park in Londonderry. It's a perfect starter trail: just a 3.5-mile loop with only 154 feet of elevation gain. The best part? After a fresh snowfall, this route becomes one of the best winter hikes around.
The trail loops around the lake and passes through both forest and wetlands, so you get a little variety without it being a tough hike. You’ll follow the shoreline, step over small boardwalks, and walk under tall pine trees. Winter conditions can change quickly, so it’s a good idea to bring microspikes or snowshoes if it’s icy or snowy. On some days, the trail is packed down enough that regular winter boots work fine. Checking recent trail updates before you go can help you know what to expect.
Not far from the trailhead, you’ll spot a small Revolutionary War-era cemetery with an information marker. It’s a short stop, but it’s interesting to read about while you take a moment to enjoy the surroundings.
Compared to some of Vermont’s busier parks, Lowell Lake State Park stays fairly quiet year-round, and winter makes it even more low-key. Parking is free, the trail is dog-friendly, and the wider area is popular for cross-country skiing when the snow gets deep enough. Views of the Green Mountains open up along parts of the lake, and the frozen shoreline highlights the calm and stillness of the park.
Because the trail stays mostly flat, it’s a good introduction to winter hiking. It’s long enough to make the trip feel worthwhile but not so long that you’ll be tired halfway through. Winter also makes it easier to notice things you might miss in other seasons, like animal tracks in the snow, the sound of ice settling on the lake, or the way the light filters through the trees.
Before you go, dress in layers to stay warm and flexible as you hike. Waterproof boots will keep your feet comfortable, and trekking poles can help with balance if the trail is slippery. Bringing a hot drink is also a nice touch, especially if you plan to stop and enjoy the view.
