We Did the Research, This Is Officially the Most Playful Hiking Trail Name in Utah

Witness mind-blowing rock formations on the most adventurous trail in Utah. This trek is an adult playground with a surprise around every corner.

Hiking can be rejuvenating for our souls. But we all know that not all hiking trails are created equal. Popular hikes like the Navajo Loop and Queen's Garden Trail in Bryce Canyon are meant for folks seeking to fill their bucket lists. Then, there are peaceful treks, like the Houndstooth Trail near Salt Lake City, that are remote, less traveled, and allow hikers to make the experience their own. My favorite kind of hike has endless, playful surprises around every corner. And I discovered one trail inside Bryce Canyon that doesn’t disappoint. Peekaboo Loop, a five-mile trail, features jaw-dropping rock formations, towering hoodoos, slot canyons, fun twists and turns, and tons of personality. This playful hiking trail in Utah has certainly earned its unique name.

If you’re wondering if Bryce Canyon National Park is worth visiting, it is, especially if you’re there to hike the challenging Peekaboo Loop. The trail is strangely unique, but we’re not complaining — it’s part of the fun. It’s jam-packed with many “peek-a-boo” moments along the way. It’s arguably one of the most awe-inspiring trails inside Bryce Canyon, with something new around every turn.

The trailhead begins at Bryce Point, a scenic spot 8,300 feet above sea level, with sweeping views of the canyons. From there, you’ll hike along the Rim Trail for about a mile until you get to the Peekaboo marker.

Since you’re descending about 1,000 feet down into the Bryce Amphitheater, you’ll get a different view of the towering rock walls and spires. After witnessing these unique geological pillars, you can easily believe that you’ve left Earth and are on another planet. Fun Fact: The park has no traditional canyons; instead, large clusters of hoodoos, aka “the amphitheater,” make up the stunning landscape.

So, what surprises are waiting to be discovered? There are plenty of nature’s eye candies here! Be on the lookout for the carved rock tunnels, giving you a peek at the dynamic terrain on the other side. You’ll come across a few of these spots that are great to stop and enjoy a water break, a snack, or better yet, to snap some really cool pics.

The “Wall of Windows” is by far the most jaw-dropping feature on the trail.  Formed millions of years ago from erosion, the openings or windows in the dramatic rock wall are unlike anything you’ve seen before. It reminds me of a Gothic Revival-style castle, especially with its eroded layers and the pointy spires. Adding to its appeal are the gorgeous shades of reds, oranges, and whites of the geological wonder. Other unique formations include the “Three Wisemen,” the “Fairy Castle,” and the “Cathedral.” Trust me, you won’t run out of things to see on the trail.

Although the name of the trail is whimsical and fun, this strenuous loop is not recommended for younger kids. A better option for the little ones is the three-mile Queen Victoria via Queen's Garden Trail. Unfortunately, no pups are allowed either. The good news? You’ll be hiking one of the best trails in Utah.

Before you leave for this outdoor adventure, be sure to bring lots of water with you. I suggest you start early to witness the sunrise over the hoodoos. Also, check the weather, wear comfortable clothing, and don’t forget your sunscreen. Parts of the trail are shaded, but you will be exposed to the elements as well. It wouldn’t hurt to download AllTrails+ either, you never know when you might need it.

Since this is a popular trail for horseback riding, be prepared to see horses, and you’ll need to watch your step as you hike. Wear sturdy shoes, as there are lots of steep sections and switchbacks on this trail. Avid hikers will take about three hours to complete this adventure, but you’ll also want to carve out time to soak up the views and snap some pics. Don’t forget your camera at home.

It’s easy to see why Peekaboo Loop is one of the highest-rated trails inside Bryce Canyon. But what I like the most about this playful hiking trail in Utah is that it’s less crowded, and a fun adult playground with incredible rewards.
