We Love Our National Parks, but This Utah Park Is Just as Magical

It’s no secret that Utah is the ultimate outdoor playground. Bucket-list-worthy destinations like the Big Five (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef) are easily the most visited attractions in the country. And rightfully so, these national parks are…magical. But I love giving flowers to our over-shadowed state parks, too. One in particular is Dead Horse Point State Park in Moab. Not only is the haven designated as an International Dark Sky Park, but it also has one of the most photographed overlooks in the world. Plus, with vast canyons, breathtaking views of the mighty Colorado River, and Canyonlands in the distance, this state park is just as magnificent as any of our national parks and is worth visiting.

Dead Horse Point State Park is only minutes away from Canyonlands but shares some of the same features. So, if you want to skip the crowds without sacrificing the experience, this state park is for you. At only 5,400 acres, Dead Horse is tiny compared to the Big Five, but don’t be fooled by that; it packs a mighty punch. 

Fun Fact: Scenes from Mission: Impossible II and Thelma and Louise were filmed inside the state park. How cool is that? This means you, too, can discover the movie magic for yourself. 

Start by visiting the Dead Horse Point Overlook to witness the most magical scenery imaginable. While standing 2,000 feet above the Colorado River, gaze at the legendary gooseneck bend, deep canyons, and the red rock buttes and mesas, which are iconic to Southern Utah. A short half-mile stroll from the parking lot can access the overlook. The easy paved trail is kid-friendly, dog-friendly (as long as you keep them on their leash), and wheelchair accessible. So, the entire family can witness the enchanting vistas without much effort.   

Take your visit to the next level by planning your trip around sunrise or sunset, and be blown away as the gorgeous hues paint the sky. Even better, stay for twilight, stargazing while marveling at the glowing night skies. Don’t forget your camera at home, you’ll want to take your own pics at this picture-perfect overlook. The best part? The park has nine easy-access overlooks providing different views of the scenic area. After your visit, you’ll see why this playground is a photographer’s dream come true. 

Of course, if you want more adventure, you can easily explore one of the hiking trails here. The good news is that the trails are more secluded, so you could possibly have this gem all to yourself (or feel like you do). What I like the most about Dead Horse is the short, family-friendly hikes, including Big Horn Overlook Trail and the East and West Rim Loop. The rewards are just as mesmerizing as the national park counterparts without the extra effort.  

What’s more? There is a world-class mountain biking trail — Intrepid Trail: Big Chief Loop — with sections suitable for beginners and families. Expert riders will find adventure on this eight-mile rugged trail that winds around high cliffs and features spectacular views of the river below. Since biking is limited in many of the national parks in the area, MTB enthusiasts will love riding here.   

Aside from the jaw-dropping vistas, stargazing, and adventurous trails, visitors can’t get enough of the camping at Dead Horse. The modern campsites are peaceful, and nothing beats waking up to incredible views of the vast desert landscape. For a more glamorous experience, five luxury yurts are available for rent, which is a bonus feature at this outdoor playground. 

So, why visit this bucket-list-worthy destination in Utah? You can skip the crowds of the national parks without sacrificing too much of the adventure. I'd also recommend adding Canyonlands National Park to your visit to experience the best of both parks.
