When fall foliage reaches its peak, there are destinations in Utah like the Alpine Scenic Loop, Guardsman Pass, and Little Cottonwood Canyon that come alive with color. However, these areas also come alive with crowds who want to capture the fall foliage views themselves. When I’m on the hunt for a scenic spot with vibrant reds, oranges, and golds but without all of the people, there’s one place I choose — the Wardsworth Trail.
The Wardsworth Trail is located up Hobble Creek Canyon near Mapleton in Utah County.
You will find the trailhead for this hike off Right Fork Hobble Creek Road, near the Balsam Campground.
The Wardsworth Trail is a 6.3-mile out-and-back trail. It is considered moderate in difficulty and you gain approximately 700 feet in elevation.
Be aware that due to early storms in 2023, portions of the trail are washed out and there may be downed trees you have to climb over. Consider using AllTrails+ to easily download a trail map so you don’t become lost!
The Wardsworth Trail follows the beautiful Wardsworth Stream. As you hike, the trail crosses the stream multiple times. In many of these spots, you will either wade through the water or cross over on a log or a board. I recommend bringing extra socks and shoes in case you become wet.
During the autumn, Mother Nature sure outdoes herself along this hike. The fall foliage surrounds both sides of the trail, creating the most breathtaking scenery.
And if you add in the stream views, the entire area is a picturesque escape.
Depending on when you visit this trail, you may likely have the area all to yourself. However, in the evenings and weekends, keep your eyes out for mountain bikers as this is a popular mountain biking trail up Hobble Creek Canyon.
There really is no reason to rush on this hiking trail in Utah. Simply relax, admire the colors, and be grateful for this wonderful time of year.
