Sandboarding Is The Coolest Family-Friendly Sport And You Can Try It At This Utah Park

Utah's state parks are little gems that offer all kinds of recreation. Whether you're into fishing, kayaking, or learning about Utah's past, there's a state park that has what you're looking for. Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park offers a unique activity - sandboarding. Check out this cool, family-friendly sport, then make plans to visit the park to give it a try!

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is one of the prettiest gems in Utah's state park system. It covers more than 3,000 acres and features some stunning sand dunes.

The dunes were formed as long as 15,000 years ago. Wind picked up tiny grains of sand from eroding Navajo sandstone and carried it through a notch in the Moquith and Moccasin mountains.

On the other side of the mountains, the valley opens up and the wind drops down, depositing the grains of sand. Over time, tall, pink dunes formed. The tallest are around 100 feet.

The dunes are a popular place for riding ATVs, hiking, and exploring. Some families bring snow sleds, and kids love to roll down the dunes. It's Utah's largest sandbox!

Another popular activity here is sandboarding. It's pretty much just what it sounds like - similar to snowboarding, but on sand.

You can use an old snowboard and boots to sandboard, but a board specifically designed for sandboarding is lighter and easier to use. You can rent one from the park.

Strap your feet in and climb aboard! Just like snowboarding, there's a learning curve, so be patient while you figure out how to balance on your board and make some turns. It takes some practice, but once you get the hang of it, it's a blast!

When you get to the bottom of the hill, hop off your board and hike back up to the top for another trip.

The sand gets its beautiful pink color from the Navajo sandstone, and it doesn't typically get too hot, so you can walk on the dunes in bare feet.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes is open year-round during daylight hours, seven days a week.
