The Hidden Nature Park in Utah That Feels Worlds Away From Salt Lake City

Hidden Hollow Natural Area in Salt Lake City offers peaceful walking paths, creek views, and a quiet escape from the city.

Some of my favorite places to explore are hidden gems that are tucked away from the public eye. These are the types of places where you can enjoy some time away from the hustle and bustle of the city—they are a little slice of paradise. Hidden Hollow Natural Area in Salt Lake City is one of these treasures. This hidden nature park in Utah isn’t large, but it’s home to gorgeous trees, a flowing creek, and walking areas. It’s perfect for a day trip outdoors.

Why Hidden Hollow Natural Area Feels Like a Secret Escape in Salt Lake City

Hidden Hollow Natural Area is a unique destination next to Sugar House Park in SLC. It’s a small outdoor oasis away from the chaos of the city, and often less crowded than other city parks. However, it's a destination with quite an interesting history.

Hidden Hollow dates back to the early 1900s when it was once part of the original Sugar House Park. However, over the years, it has become a dumping ground for various construction projects. In 1990, a group of elementary school students saw the pile of construction debris and wanted to do something about it. They worked hard to restore and revive the area, creating this beautiful outdoor classroom and natural destination.

What You'll See Along the Walking Paths and Creek

Hidden Hollow has become a gem that is perfect for some time outside. Today, as you walk around this natural area, you’ll find gorgeous trees and vegetation of all shapes and sizes. A small portion of Parley’s Creek also runs through Hidden Hollow, and there is a jogging/walking path with benches that are perfect for exploring and admiring. Additionally, while Hidden Hollow is a beautiful place for some time outdoors, there is also a pathway that connects it to present-day Sugar House Park.

During your visit to Hidden Hollow, I recommend simply walking around and listening to the sounds of nature. This is the perfect place to slow down, relax, and focus on your physical and mental well-being. You don't have to rush here—it's where you go to escape the bustle of the city.

What to Know Before Visiting Hidden Hollow Natural Area

You will find the entrance to Hidden Hollow in the northeast corner of the Sugar House shopping area. Keep in mind that this SLC gem is small, and the walking trail is just over 0.25 miles. However, this short walk is perfect for a peaceful stroll, and if you desire a long route, you can connect to the pathway and venture into Sugar House Park. Dogs are also welcome on this path, but must be kept on a leash. Keep an eye out for cyclists, runners, and walkers, as many people use this beautiful park. Additionally, summer is a popular time for people to explore this area, but we particularly love the autumn months, when the vibrant fall foliage transforms this area into a colorful escape.

Hidden Hollow Natural Area is a true hidden gem and one that you’ll be grateful to discover and explore. It’s a slice of heaven in the middle of the city. You can learn more about Hidden Hollow on the Salt Lake City Public Lands Department website and AllTrails.
