Few people realize that the U.S. is home to the tallest mountain in the entire world. If you thought this title belonged to Everest, then you're not crazy. The dormant volcano known as Mouna Kea is situated on the island of Hawaii. Looming 13,802 ft above sea level, this peak is the highest point in Hawaii.

Yet there's a lot more to this iconic wonder than is visible to the eye. In fact, the mountain extends approximately 19,700 below the ocean.

The total height of Mauna Kea is then a staggering 33,500 feet. That's a mile taller than Everest!

Can you imagine how massive this million-year-old structure would appear if all of it were above sea level? It's nearly impossible to fathom.
