This Lesser-Known U.S. National Park Is Definitely Worth The Visit

Craters of the Moon, one of the lesser-known of America's National Park System, is no less magnificent than the others. Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve was dedicated in 1924 by Calvin Coolidge, who described it as "a weird and scenic landscape peculiar to itself."

Located in the Snake River Plain of central Idaho, the area is characterized by ancient lava and sagebrush.

The park contains eight short hiking trails, ranging from .05 miles to 1.8 miles in length.

As you meander down pathways and learn about the unique history of this corner of the U.S., you may feel like you've indeed landed on the moon.

The massive lava fields are the result of a series of eruptions, the most recent of which probably occurred nearly 2,000 years ago.

And while this all may seem like ancient history, scientists believe we're in store for another eruption that could spread nearly one cubic mile.
