Hike Palo Duro Canyon State Park’s Rock Garden Trail in Texas for an Unforgettable Adventure

This five-mile trail is tough, with a decent elevation gain and uneven footing, but none of that matters once you take in the gorgeous scenery. I’d even go so far as to call it one of the best hikes in Texas.

In general, I tend to prefer easy hikes in Texas (so long as they still offer amazing views!). That way, I can focus on enjoying my time in nature instead of using all of my energy to simply navigate the trail. Every once in a while, however, I crave a challenge, and when that happens, the Rock Garden Trail in Palo Duro Canyon State Park is one of my go-to's. This five-mile trail is tough, with a decent elevation gain and uneven footing, but none of that matters once you take in the gorgeous scenery. I’d even go so far as to call it one of the best hikes in Texas.

The out-and-back trail begins in a boulder field at the very bottom of the canyon. To be surrounded by jagged, ancient rocks that tower over your head feels a bit like stepping back into prehistoric times — especially when there’s hardly anyone else around.

You’ll ascend to nearly 800 feet, but the climb is divided across several switchbacks, so it actually feels pretty doable. Make sure to stop and admire the views (and catch your breath!) along the way — after all, you didn’t embark on such a strenuous journey for nothing!

The rocky overhangs are what really seal the deal for me on this trail. I wouldn’t recommend going too close to the edge, but even just venturing a few feet onto the platforms showcases the canyon as you’ve never seen it before. Enjoy sweeping panoramas of the majestic red rocks dotted with lush greenery and prepare to be awestruck. Keep in mind that loose rocks are not uncommon on the trail, so be careful where you step and be sure to wear durable shoes. REI is my go-to for high-quality hiking gear!
