Underground wine caves are all the rage these days, and we're lucky enough to have one right here in Texas. Calais Winery near Fredericksburg in the small town of Hye takes you on a journey beneath the earth's surface to tantalize your taste buds with wine made from 100% Texas-grown grapes. Check it out:
Disguised as a shed, this unassuming building is actually home to one of the Texas Hill Country's most unique wineries. Just beyond these doors lies a staircase descending below the earth's surface, where the precious juice is hiding.
Serving as a cellar and tasting room, this underground wine cave has a speakeasy vibe about it. Adding to the old-fashioned charm are walls reclaimed from a horse barn and birch plywood panels throughout.
Only Texas-grown grapes are used in the winemaking process. Calais works closely with farmers in site selection, pruning, and crop variety to ensure only the highest quality vino is produced.
Due to its limited space, wine tasting in the cave is a one-on-one, intimate experience. For just $15 a person, you'll learn all about what goes into crafting such incredible wine and sample some of the bestselling varieties.
Good wine and even better company — we can't imagine a better recipe for happiness. Come experience the magic firsthand at 8115 US 290 West, Hye, TX, 78635.
