Texas has a lot of state parks (89, to be exact), so it makes sense that some of them would fly under the radar. Personally, I prefer these lesser-known parks to the more popular ones because they provide what I’m seeking most of all when I go into nature: solace. That’s exactly why Stephen F. Austin State Park is one of my favorite state parks in Texas. Located in the tiny town of San Felipe, this hidden gem is nestled on the banks of the beautiful Brazos River and boasts several miles of nature trails. I had no idea the park even existed until recently — you’d never know it’s less than an hour from Houston!
The park is named after Stephen F. Austin, who established Anglo-American colonies in this area of Texas in the 1800s. In addition to reveling in the historical significance of the park, guests can explore five miles of nature trails. All of the trails are short and easy, with the longest of them being a mile round-trip. It’s an ideal destination for families!
Some of the trails run along the riverbank, while others traverse boggy swamplands. It’s very much a “choose your own adventure” type of situation (especially since the hikes are all so quick — theoretically, you could do them all in one day!).
What strikes me the most about this park is just how green it is. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much greenery in one place before. The grove of sycamore trees is among the most spectacular sights I’ve ever laid eyes on.
As if the trails weren’t enough, the park also offers campsites and is home to native wildlife such as deer. You can also visit nearby historic sites to learn more about Stephen F. Austin and how his efforts helped shape Texas into what it is today.
Visit AllTrails for more information about the trails within the park. You can also visit Texas Parks & Wildlife to learn more about the park in general. If you’re interested in perks like national park guides and 3D maps, consider signing up for AllTrails+.
