The Little-Known Natural Wonder In Texas That Becomes Even More Enchanting In The Wintertime

The best winter destinations in Texas aren't always freezing cold or covered in snow. Personally, I seek out secluded, quiet places during winter in the Lone Star State to really embrace the contemplative nature of the season. One such place is Cedar Hill State Park, located near the DFW Metroplex. This lesser-known state park is worth visiting any time of year, but especially during the winter because of its peaceful nature and lack of large crowds.

Featuring a pristine, 7,500-acre lake, Cedar Hill State Park is one of the best-kept secrets in North Texas. It's just a stone's throw from the DFW Metroplex, but it feels like an entirely different world.

No matter what time of year you visit the park, it's an outdoor playground. Summertime guests can enjoy swimming in the lake...

...while winter visitors can embark on several miles of hiking and biking trails that vary in length and difficulty.

Personally, I'm partial to visiting Cedar Hill in the winter; something about the barren trees and almost guaranteed solitude makes it so much more peaceful.

During the winter, instead of swimming in the lake, cast a line instead. It's stocked with largemouth black bass, crappie, and catfish, so you can rest assured you won't go home empty handed.

There are two lighted fishing jetties, a perch pond for kids, two four-lane boat ramps, and a lighted boat trailer parking area.

Another great winter activity at Cedar Hill State Park is taking a self-guided tour of the Penn Farm Agricultural History Center.

This living history farm was in operation from the mid-1800s until the mid-1900s, and it's hardly changed since then.

If you'd like to extend your visit overnight, the park boasts 350 developed campsites with water and electricity.

All sites are near restrooms with hot showers, and 150 of them even have sewer hookups. ADA-accessible sites are available, and there are additional primitive campsites.
