Have you ever been to Big Bend Ranch State Park? If you haven't been before, you're really missing out. At 311,000 acres, it's Texas' largest state park. This park is great for rafting, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and for enjoying and immersing oneself in the fascinating and beautiful Chihuahuan desert ecosystem.

As you might have guessed based on its name, it's located in southwestern Texas, right next to the also amazing Big Bend National Park. If you're someone who loves to hike, you're sure to get your fill of trails in this part of the state. However, if you ask us, one of the very best trails you'll find is the Closed Canyon Trail in Big Bend Ranch State Park. This unique hike is just 1.5 miles out-and-back, but it is highly rated by all who undertake it.

The Closed Canyon Trail starts at a parking lot off Farm to Market Road 170 in the middle of Big Bend Ranch State Park. The Closed Canyon Trailhead is well marked and is easy to find. After parking you'll walk due south along the trail toward the mountains. This trail is rated moderate by some, but easy by others. It's kid and dog friendly, but dogs must remain on a leash at all times.

Once you reach the mountains, you'll enter the canyon. At first, the trail will narrow little by little. There are some great photo opportunities here. Eventually, the trail will become narrower but by bit, and you may feel a bit claustrophobic in spots. The canyon walls will tower above you and will get taller as you go deeper into the canyon.

Along the way, you can expect to see wildflowers during the warmer months, as water collects in the canyon. You may also encounter various wildlife, including snakes, birds, coyotes, foxes, lizards, and other animals.

You're sure to be amazed by the beauty of this area. This trail may be short, but it's well worth the effort. It's likely that its unlike any other trail you have tried before. Be careful on your hike and be sure to bring plenty of water. People love this trail because its shaded most of the way, but it still can get hot in the summer. The floor of the canyon can be slippery due to loose dirt so you'll want to watch your step as well.
