I Embarked on the Newest Trail in Texas’ Big Thicket National Preserve and It Was Magical

The Longleaf Pine Trail opened in 2024 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Big Thicket National Preserve. The short and easy trail exceeded my expectations and is, in my opinion, one of the best hikes in Texas.

What's your favorite landscape? I'm usually a mountains girl, but the forest is starting to grow on me. I'm lucky enough to live near Texas' Big Thicket National Preserve, a vast, magical place full of ecological diversity and dense woodland terrain. Located in the heart of the lush Piney Woods region, the preserve spans over 100,000 acres and offers over 40 miles of the best hikes in Texas. I recently headed up to Kountze from my home in Beaumont to check out the Longleaf Pine Trail, which just opened in 2024 to celebrate the park's 50th anniversary. This short and easy new trail in Texas exceeded my expectations, and it was the perfect quick afternoon adventure to get me out of the house and into the great outdoors.

At just one mile round-trip, the Longleaf Pine Trail begins near the park headquarters. It's almost impossible to miss because of the trail signs directing you where to go.

The unpaved path leads through, as its name suggests, a longleaf pine forest with a mixture of full-grown trees and saplings. Although civilization isn't far away, the thick growth of towering trees makes you feel like you're a million miles from the nearest city.

The trail features an elevated viewing platform that overlooks a group of pines primarily planted by volunteers. I also had the opportunity to see some gorgeous fall colors since I visited during autumn.

Since it was such a short hike, I took some time to close my eyes and just listen to the sounds of nature. From chirping birds to rustling leaves, the forest teems with life, and it's incredible to witness.
