This Little Known Hiking Path in Texas’s Caddo Lake State Park is Our Favorite First Hike of the Year

It’s a tradition of mine to start every year off with a hike — preferably a little-known hiking path in Texas. One of my favorite January hikes is the Caddo Lake State Park Pine Ridge Loop.

It’s a tradition of mine to start every year off with a hike — preferably a little-known hiking path in Texas that showcases beautiful scenery and isn’t crowded at all. That way, I can clear my mind and reflect on the past 12 months while setting goals for the new year. One of my favorite January hikes is the Caddo Lake State Park Pine Ridge Loop. Most people think of Caddo Lake as a kayaking destination, but the park is also home to some great trails. This one is short, easy, and perfect for a quiet and contemplative winter hike.

Less than a mile long (0.8 miles, to be exact), the Caddo Lake State Park Pine Ridge Loop is an easy loop that starts and ends just off the main park road. It’s well marked and maintained, so you can save your energy for taking in the beautiful surroundings. Since Caddo Lake is in the heart of East Texas’ famed Piney Woods region, expect to see lots of lush trees that tower hundreds of feet above your head. It's absolutely beautiful and makes it one of the most scenic hikes at Caddo Lake State Park.

The terrain is a mixture of dirt, gravel, and charming wooden footbridges, the latter turning the scene into a real-life fairytale. You’ll see lots of native flora and fauna, including mushrooms, wild berries, colorful flowers, and a wide variety of birds. While the trail is generally easy if you're looking for beginner-friendly hikes in Texas, it features a relatively steep incline of approximately 130 feet. The good news is that it’s over quickly, and the rest of the hike is essentially flat. Hikers will enjoy gorgeous views of the lake, which is especially peaceful on a winter’s day in East Texas. This is my favorite time of year to visit Caddo Lake because the stillness is hauntingly beautiful, and I can feel a sense of peace as I take in the natural surroundings.
