The Can’t-Miss Texas Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List
This iconic hike in Texas offers beautiful views of the Franklin Mountains and a chance to learn about Texas' mining history.
The most iconic hikes in Texas are popular for a reason. These scenic hiking trails will show off some of the most beautiful landscapes in Texas, giving you a new appreciation for our lovely state. The El Paso Tin Mines Trail is one of my favorite hiking trails in Texas because it showcases the state’s natural beauty while weaving in Texas’ mining history. Let’s check it out:
Located in Franklin Mountains State Park, the El Paso Tin Mines Trail is a 6.8-mile out-and-back trail near El Paso that’s a moderately challenging trail. It’s the perfect trail for folks looking to push themselves on longer hikes, just make sure you’ve got all the hiking essentials before you go. It’s a popular trail for mountain biking, but you’ll find plenty of folks on foot, too.
There’s a 1,040-foot elevation gain on this trail, but it’s a pretty gradual incline. There’s a little bit of a steep scramble on the last 1/8 mile, so make sure you’re wearing hiking boots you trust. This is a dog-friendly trail, so feel free to bring your fur baby along for the adventure.
If these photos of the El Paso Tin Mines Trail tell you anything, it’s that you won’t have much shade. Don’t come back with a sunburn! There is cell phone coverage throughout the state park. Since multiple trails weave throughout the area, it’s best to have an All Trails + account and download the trail map ahead of time.
The trail itself is the former access road to what was America’s only operating tin mine. The El Paso Tin Mining and Smelting Company was founded in 1909 but shut down in 1915 after proving to be rather unsuccessful. Visitors can explore two of the old shafts and the ruins of the smelter, just be careful! A headlamp would be a valuable hiking accessory here.
The views of the surrounding Franklin Mountains are picture-perfect. As you make your way through this iconic Texas trail, make sure to snap some photos. It’s hard to beat these views!
