The 7-Mile Hiking Trail in Texas That Is a Fall Foliage Wonderland

Explore the stunning fall foliage at Lost Maples State Natural Area in Texas. Hike the 7-mile Lost Maples West Trail Loop for breathtaking views and vibrant autumn colors.

Most people don’t expect to see fall foliage in Texas, and it is generally true that our trees lack the impressive hues that you see in New England, but there are a few exceptions. Enter Lost Maples State Natural Area, a state park tucked away in the small town of Vanderpool that is known for its autumnal splendor. While all of the trails within the park showcase dazzling pops of color in the fall, today, I’ll be guiding you along the Lost Maples West Trail Loop. This 7-mile hike is only moderately difficult, and each step leads you further into an autumn wonderland.

The trail partially follows the Sabinal River, which contrasts beautifully with the vibrant fall colors surrounding it. Feeling the leaves crunch beneath your feet is nothing short of magical — especially when paired with the crisp autumn air. The elevation gain is about 850 feet, but you won’t regret the slight challenge one bit after seeing the jaw-dropping panoramic view from the scenic overlook.

Keep in mind that fall foliage typically peaks later in the season here in Texas, so I would recommend visiting Lost Maples around Thanksgiving for the absolute best views. That also means it should be cool enough to actually feel like fall, so you won’t have to worry about sweating under your favorite flannel (I know that struggle all too well!).

The colors run the full spectrum of autumnal hues, from the deepest crimsons to the richest ambers to the shiniest golds. I especially love when the trees form a sort of archway overhead, turning the whole scene into a fairytale.

Visit AllTrails to learn more about the Lost Maples West Trail Loop. I also recommend signing up for AllTrails+ if you’re an avid hiker like me. I particularly love how the app alerts you if you take a wrong turn — I have so much more peace of mind on my adventures! You can also head to the Texas Parks & Wildlife website for more information about the park in general, such as current hours and the cost to enter.

While you’re in the Vanderpool area, make a pit stop at Love Creek Orchards to try the best apple pie, apple ice cream (my favorite!), and other apple-centric baked goods using sweet, juicy homegrown apples. And tell us your favorite places to see fall foliage in Texas in the comments!
