This Historic Texas Cave Is Opening To The Public For The First Time In Two Years

Many cave systems run beneath the Lone Star State, but none have a history as rich as Robber Baron. This preserve is one of the oldest caverns in Texas, and it only opens to the public every 18 months. Experience the majesty firsthand on Saturday, September 28 - tickets are going fast, so snag yours ASAP!

Hiding underneath an area of thick, jungle-like brush, Robber Baron Cave Preserve is the second-oldest commercial cave in Texas. It has an incredibly rich history, having even served as a speakeasy during Prohibition!

Its namesake is a group of bandits who allegedly inhabited the cave over 100 years ago. These robbers, calling themselves "The Vultures" are rumored to have left gold and other riches behind somewhere deep in the confusing, labyrinth-like cavern system.

Robber Baron is known as a "wild cave," which means there are no sidewalks or handrails. While this is a positive thing because it means human interference has been minimal, it also increases fall risk. Be sure to wear tennis shoes with a nice grip!

Self-guided tours are allowed on a first-come, first-served basis. Explore at a leisurely pace, spending more time marveling at features that interest you and passing up those which prove underwhelming.

Alternatively, cave experts will be offering small-group excursions. Spelunkers will be led to secret passageways not accessible on the solo walkthrough, so a decent level of physical fitness is required. Participants must be at least 12 years old, and advanced booking is necessary.

Before heading out, don't forget to have your picture taken in the cave by a professional photographer. The prints will be available for purchase as soon as you emerge!
